Etymology: Shortened < Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin, the proprietary name of the brand of champagne < French veuve widow (see veuve n.) + the name of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, née Ponsardin (1777–1866), French businesswoman and (from 1805) owner of the firm of Veuve Clicquot-Ponsardin. Compare French Veuve Clicquot, denoting the champagne (1864 or earlier).In 1772 Philippe Clicquot founded a champagne manufacturing company in Rheims, France. Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin married François Clicquot, the founder's son, in 1795; her husband died in 1805, leaving her in control of the company.
