单词 verbascum
释义

verbascumn.

Brit. /və(ː)ˈbaskəm/, U.S. /vərˈbæskəm/
Forms:

α. Old English 1500s–1600s uerbascum, early Middle English 1500s– verbascum.

β. 1500s–1600s verbascus.

γ. 1600s verbasco.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin verbascum.
Etymology: < classical Latin verbascum (Pliny), of unknown origin (it appears to show an Italic (or perhaps originally Ligurian) suffix -asco , -asca ; compare marasca marasca n., labrusca labrusca n.). In γ. forms apparently after Spanish verbasco (1555) and Italian verbasco (1561); compare Portuguese verbasco (1707).In the β. forms showing remodelling of the ending after Latin masculine nouns in -us. The word was reborrowed in the 16th cent.; there is no continuity with the Old English and early Middle English use.
Originally: common mullein, Verbascum thapsus (family Scrophulariaceae). In later use also: any of the other plants comprising the Eurasian genus Verbascum, which typically have rosettes of hairy leaves and tall, erect racemes of cup-shaped flowers, and are frequently cultivated in gardens. Also (in form Verbascum): the genus itself. Cf. mullein n. 1.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 177.
