Forms: Also 1500s–1600s vylde, 1500s–1600s (1800s) vilde; 1500s Scottish vyild, 1500s–1600s (1800s) vyld, 1600s vil'd.
Etymology: Variant of vile adj., with excrescent -d . The earliest instances are Scottish (compare tylde for tile n.1), but the form is extremely common from c1580 to 1650.
Obsolete exc. archaic or dialect.
