Etymology: < Latin vērisimilis, vērī similis (see verisimilitude n.), after similar adj. Compare Italian verisimile, Spanish verosimil, Portuguese veri-, verosimil.
Having the appearance or semblance of truth or reality; appearing true or real; probable. In early use rare. Frequent from c1845, apparently after Carlyle, who used it freely.
