Etymology: < post-classical Latin Vulcanicus of or relating to Vulcan (1506 or earlier) < classical Latin Vulcānus Vulcan n. + -icus -ic suffix. In sense 2 apparently after either vulcano, variant of volcano n., or Italian vulcanico (1754). Compare French vulcanique (1571 in Middle French in sense ‘of or relating to Vulcan’, 1814 in sense ‘made by the action of fire’, 1890 designating volcanic eruptions of the type shown by the island of Vulcano), German vulkanisch (1761 or earlier designating the Aeolian Islands, 1733 or earlier in sense 2), Portuguese vulcânico (1789).
