2. Theology. The Eucharistic doctrine that the faithful communicant receives the power of the body and blood of Christ along with the (unchanged) bread and wine.This doctrine, which is particularly associated with Calvinism, is distinguished from receptionism, which holds that the communicant receives the true body and blood of Christ along with the bread and wine, and from the doctrine of transubstantiation, which holds that the substance of the bread and wine itself is converted into the body and blood of Christ.
