Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin virtus dormitiva.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin virtus dormitiva dormitive property (1673 in Molière: see below) < classical Latin virtus virtue n. + post-classical Latin dormitiva , feminine of dormitivus dormitive adj.Originally with reference to the following lines in Act III of Molière's Le malade imaginaire (1673): ‘Mihi a docto doctore Domandatur causam et rationem quare Opium facit dormire. A quoi respondeo, Quia est in eo Vertus dormitiva, Cuius est natura Sensus assoupire.’ ‘I am asked by the learned doctor the cause and reason why opium causes sleep. To which I reply, Because it has a dormitive property, whose nature is to lull the senses to sleep.’ In β. forms with alteration of the first element after French vertu virtue n.; compare French vertu dormitive (1724 or earlier; after post-classical Latin virtus dormitiva).
1. A sleep-inducing property or effect of a drug. Also in extended use.Often with reference to Molière's satirization in Le malade imaginaire (1673) of the circular explanations sometimes used in early medicine. See note in etymology and cf. sense 2.
