Etymology: < German wolchonskoit (A. Kämmerer 1831, in Jahrb. f. Mineral., etc. II. 420), < the name of Prince ‘Wolchonskoy’ (? i.e. Volkonsky): see -ite suffix1.
Mineralogy.
A green or bluish-green amorphous clay mineral of the montmorillonite group in which there is some substitution by chromium, now regarded as a variety of nontronite.
