Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Volksgemeinschaft.
Etymology: < German Volksgemeinschaft (early 19th cent.) < Volks- , combining form of Volk people (see folk n.) + Gemeinschaft community (Old High German gimeinscaf , Middle High German gemeinschaft ; < gimeini i-mene adj. + -scaf -ship suffix).
Now chiefly historical.
In contexts referring to Germany: a unified national community.In later use chiefly with reference to the concept as espoused by the Nazi Party, which described the Volksgemeinschaft as a strong, harmonious, and homogeneous German society, and which was to be established according to the Party's racial ideologies and political aims.
