Etymology: < German Volkskammer (1948 with reference to the proposed parliament of the German Democratic Republic, which came into existence on 7 October 1949) < Volks- , combining form of Volk people (see folk n.) + Kammer chamber n.Compare the following isolated earlier occurrence of the German noun in an English context with reference to a legislative body in Berlin during the Weimar Republic:1920 Mt. Pleasant (Iowa) Daily News 7 Jan. The grant was decided upon as a compromise when members of the volkskammer were asked to pass a law regarding midwives as officials of the state.

The parliament of the German Democratic Republic (1949–90).The Volkskammer was originally the lower house of a bicameral assembly (cf. quots. 1948, 1949) but became the sole chamber of a unicameral assembly following the dissolution of the upper house (the Länderkammer) in 1952.In quot. 1948 in the context of a draft constitution for what would become the German Democratic Republic (at that time the part of Germany occupied by the U.S.S.R.).
