Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian voce velata.
Etymology: < Italian voce velata (early 19th cent. or earlier in musical use) < voce voice (see voce di gola n.) + velata , feminine of velato (see note at veiled adj.). Compare earlier veiled voice (see veiled adj. 4b).
A breathy, muffled, or indistinct voice. Cf. veiled adj. 4b.
