Etymology: < water n. + hog n.1 In sense 1 probably after Brazilian Portuguese porco d'água (1587 or earlier; quot. 1625 translates a Portuguese manuscript source); compare also French cochon d'eau (1716 or earlier in this sense), scientific Latin Hydrochoerus ( M. J. Brisson Regnum animale (1756) 117), German Wasserschwein (a1774; earlier in senses ‘hippopotamus’ (second half of the 16th cent.) and ‘dolphin’ (first half of the 17th cent.)).
