Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bum n.1, baste v.3; English bum , baste v.3
Etymology: Perhaps (i) < bum n.1 + baste v.3, or perhaps (ii) < bum, imitative of the sound of a blow (compare earlier bump v.1, slightly later bum v.3, and perhaps also bumbaze v.) + baste v.3In quot. 1640 at sense 2 (following canvas ) probably punningly after bombast n.
Now rare (chiefly English regional (eastern) in later use).
