N.E.D (1921) also records a form Middle English wametoue.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: wame n., tow n.2
Etymology: < wame n. + tow n.2 Compare wanty n.The β. and δ. forms show assimilation of the nasal to the following dental. The origin of the final -n in some of the β. forms is unclear; influence from wanton adj. seems unlikely for semantic reasons. In γ. forms influenced by womb n. In later use, the unstressed second element of this word caused it to be partly assimilated wanty n., leading to the formally ambiguous δ. forms and probably also to occasional northern and Scots uses of wanty n.
Chiefly English regional (northern) and Scottish.
A rope or band placed round the belly of a horse, mule, etc., and used to fasten the pack on a packsaddle or a load on the back of the animal; a girth or bellyband.
