Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek λίθος , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek λίθος stone (see -lith comb. form) + -ic suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek λιθικός of stone, French -lithique.Formations are found from the first half of the 19th cent., e.g. monolithic adj., megalithic adj. Formations in sense 2 are found from the second half of the 19th cent., e.g. Neolithic adj., Palaeolithic adj., both apparently coined by J. Lubbock.
1. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘of or relating to stone of a specified type’, typically corresponding to nouns in -lith comb. form, as megalithic adj., monolithic adj., pelolithic adj., etc.
