Etymology: Probably < an unattested Virginia Algonquian cognate of Meskwaki wâkihpeni and Ojibwa (Nipissing) waagipin, both denoting the same plant < a first element of uncertain origin (perhaps an Algonquian base with the sense ‘bent’) + an Algonquian base denoting an edible root or tuber.The origin of the initial y in the β. forms is uncertain. Wankapin is also attested earlier as part of a place name in eastern Virginia (1767 in the Wankapin branch).

A lotus native to North and Central America having fragrant yellowish-white flowers, large cupped leaves on long petioles, and edible seeds and tubers, Nelumbo lutea. Also: the seeds or tubers of this plant. Also called water chincapin.
