A leaf of a book with a notch cut in the edge enabling a conjuror to open the book at a particular place while giving the appearance that it was opened at random. Cf. bum-card n.The passage from which quot. 1584 is taken describes a trick in which multiple sets of ‘bumleaves’ are used to enable a conjuror to flick through the pages of the same book a number of times, each time giving the impression that the contents of the book have been magically changed.
