Etymology: < water n. + mole n.3With quot. 1770 at sense 1a compare Scottish Gaelic famh-bhual mole, water vole, shrew mouse, apparently lit. ‘water mole’ (although this is apparently first attested later: 19th cent. or earlier); compare earlier lavellan n.

a. Chiefly Scottish and English regional (Cambridgeshire). A small aquatic mammal likened to the mole in appearance or habits, as the water shrew, Neomys fodiens, and (a dark-coloured variety of) the water vole, Arvicola amphibius. Obsolete. rare.In quot. 1770 the identification is conjectural. In quot. 1866 perhaps an error for water vole.
