单词 waycoriant
释义

waycoriantn.

Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps an arbitrary formation, coined by William Sanderson (1586–1676), English historian (see note at definition).
Obsolete. rare.
Apparently: the name of a purple or violet pigment. The term is obscure and perhaps fabricated by Sanderson. The passage in which it occurs outlines the method of creating the correct pigments to paint a number of precious stones, a method which Sanderson describes as ‘Hieroglyphical Cabalisticall’. The specific pigments required for emeralds and sapphires are well-established ones (verdigris and ultramarine, respectively), but for rubies Sanderson suggests wagron and for amethysts the terms in quot. 1658, none of which is otherwise attested.
