单词 water swallow
释义

water swallown.1

Brit. /ˈwɔːtə ˌswɒləʊ/, U.S. /ˈwɔdər ˌswɑloʊ/, /ˈwɑdər ˌswɑloʊ/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., swallow n.1
Etymology: < water n. + swallow n.1 Compare Dutch waterzwaluw sand martin (1573), kind of tern (1881), German Wasserschwalbe sand martin (1555 as wasserschwalme ), kind of tern (19th cent.). In sense 3 (denoting a kind of tern) after scientific Latin Hydrochelidon, former genus name (F. Boie 1822, in Isis von Oken 563).
Now rare.
1. A small bird often found near water and having a bobbing motion, whose arrival was taken as an indication of spring, variously identified as a wader or a wagtail (genus Motacilla). Obsolete. In quot. 1544, Turner aims to explain two classical Greek bird names which remain obscure (being variously associated with dippers, waders, and wagtails), and the identity of the bird he describes in the subsequent passage is unclear; A. H. Evans in Turner on Birds (1903) supposed it to be the common sandpiper, Actitis hypoleuca. Some of the later references are perhaps to the yellow wagtail, Motacilla flava.
