Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., cat n.1
Etymology: < water n. + cat n.1The semantic motivation of sense 1 is unclear; a foreign-language original of the source cited in the two quotations for this sense has not been traced. In quot. 1800 at sense 2 after German Wasserkatze (1798 in the passage translated, or earlier), itself after Italian gatto acquatico (1796 or earlier); with this quotation, compare Malayalam nīrnāy (also nīrnā ), lit. ‘water dog’ and nīrppūcca , lit. ‘water cat’, both denoting the otter. With quot. 1831 compare late Sanskrit jalamārjāra otter, lit. ‘water-cat’ (also with vernacular pronunciation jalmārjār).
1. A firework designed to be thrown into water, similar to a water cracker. Obsolete. rare.
