Etymology: < water n. + pot n.1 Compare Middle Dutch wāterpot vessel for holding water (Dutch waterpot also in sense ‘chamber pot’ (1588 in Kiliaan in this sense)).In sense 3 after corresponding use (partly in post-classical Latin) of classical Latin crātēr crater n., hydria hydria n., and urna urn n.
