Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: water n., an element of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Apparently < water n. + a second element of unknown origin reflected also by the first element of barge-board n., barge-couple n., barge-course n. Compare also Scots bairge, barge, in the same sense (late 19th cent.), and English regional (south-western) barge outer edge of a gable (late 19th cent.).Earlier currency is probably implied by waterbarge v.
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
A piece of wood or stone, sometimes ornamental, placed along a gable, roof edge, etc., to protect a building from rain; = barge-board n.
