释义

weeviln.

Brit. /ˈwiːv(ɪ)l/, U.S. /ˈwiv(ə)l/
Forms: α. Old English wibl, wibil, wifel, Middle English wyvyl, wyvoll, 1500s wyvel(l(e, 1500s–1600s wivel(l; Middle English wevel, wevyl, 1500s wevell ( wew-), -yll, 1500s–1600s wevill, 1500s–1700s wevil; 1500s weavill (1600s -il), 1500s–1600s, 1800s weavel (1600s -ell); 1500s weevell, 1500s– weevil (1500s–1600s -ill). β. dialect1600s wibel, wibill, 1800s wibble; 1700s–1800s weeble, 1800s weabel. γ. dialect1600s whule, 1700s–1800s whool, 1800s wheul, whewl, wule, weuel, yule.
Etymology: Old English wifel (masculine), beetle, corresponding to Old Saxon (gold-)wivil glowworm, Middle Low German wevel , Old High German wibil , wipil beetle, chafer, Old Norse vifill in tordyfill dung beetle (Middle Swedish plural torddöffla , Swedish tordyfvel , Norwegian tordivel ; compare Old English tordwifel ) < Old Germanic *weƀilo-z , < *weƀ- to move about briskly (see wave v.) or *weƀ- to weave n., ‘from the filaments spun for the larva-case’ (Skeat). From the same root is the synonymous Old English wibba ( < *weƀjon-) beetle, glowworm. For the special phonology in English compare beetle representing Old English bitela ; the Old English i when lengthened in an open syllable became ē in Middle English The β and γ forms illustrate normal dialectal alterations of the verb. In the 16th and 17th centuries some writers apparently confused the name of the weevil with that of the weasel, using wesell , weezel , for the insect; see the quotations under weezel n.
1.
a. In Old English, a beetle of any kind; in later use, any beetle classed under the group Rhyncophora, the larvæ of which, and sometimes the beetles themselves, are destructive by boring into grain, fruit, nuts, the bark of trees, etc.; esp. a beetle belonging to any of the numerous species of the family Curculionidæ, the true weevils; also one belonging to the families Brenthidæ and Bruchidæ.The best known are the corn-weevil, Calandra granaria, a small red beetle that does much damage in granaries by boring into the grains of corn in order to deposit its eggs, and the nut weevil n. For clover-, grain-, palm-, pea-, rice-weevil see those words.
