Etymology: < Cree wēhwēw snow goose, especially in its white phase (probably < an element of imitative origin + -wē to make a sound (specified by the preceding element) + -w , suffix forming agent nouns), perhaps influenced in form by wave n. or wavy adj. (with folk-etymological reinterpretation based on its flight pattern). Compare later wawa n.

Any of several wild geese of North America, esp. the snow goose, Anser caerulescens, and Ross's goose, Anser rossii. Also with distinguishing word. Cf. wawa n.
