Etymology: < way n.1 + of prep. + the adj. + cross n., after post-classical Latin via crucis the (arduous) path of Christian discipleship (11th cent.), the route of the journey taken by Jesus to the place of his crucifixion (16th cent. or earlier), the arrangement of the Stations of the Cross, designed to mirror this route, and its associated devotions (18th cent. or earlier). Compare Via Crucis at via n. 2b.In quot. ?1504 at sense 1 immediately after Middle French chemin de la saincte croix the path of Christian discipleship, lit. ‘road of the holy cross’ (1488 in the passage translated), itself apparently after Latin.
