单词 bugaboo
释义

bugaboon.

Brit. /ˈbʌɡəbuː/, U.S. /ˈbəɡəˌbu/
Forms: 1700s bug-aboo, 1700s buggybo, 1700s buggybow, 1700s–1800s bugabo, 1700s–1900s bug-a-boo, 1700s– bugaboo, 1700s– buggaboo, 1800s boggy boy (English regional (Yorkshire)), 1800s boggy boy, 1800s bugaboe, 1800s buggaboe, 1800s– boggy-bo, 1800s– buggyboo, 1900s boggie-baw (English regional (northern)), 1900s– boogerboo (U.S. regional), 1900s– boogieboo (U.S. regional).
Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: bug n.1
Etymology: Apparently an alteration of bug n.1 with an alliterating extension, perhaps influenced by boo int. or bo int. Compare earlier bogle-bo n. at bogle n. Derivatives, buggle-boo n. 2, bug-boy n., bugbear n., and also bucca-boo n. at bucca n. Compounds. Compare also earlier buggan-boes (see quot. 1660 at buggane n.) and Welsh †bwgan bo (17th cent., perhaps < English).Old French Beugibus , Bugibus , the name of a demon, has sometimes been compared, but this is apparently a variant of Belgibus , Belzebuz Beelzebub n. and is unlikely to have influenced the English word.
