Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian, combined with an English element. Etymons: bugger v., Italian -anto.

Etymology: Apparently < bugger v. + Italian -anto, suffix forming present participles (compare -ant suffix¹). In early use chiefly in the works of Ned Ward (compare quots. 1699, 1709), often used as a term of abuse applied to foreigners.Perhaps compare the following earlier instance of Buggeranthes as the name of a fictional general, a fanciful formation < bugger v. + -anthes (compare anthos n.), apparently humorously after Greek personal names such as Cleanthes, Timanthes, etc.:?c1680 Sodom (Dramatis Personæ) in Earl of Rochester Wks.
