Etymology: < well adv. + corned adj.1In sense 2 originally (in quot. 1643) after Italian ben granito (1641 (in spighe ben granite ears bearing a good head of grain) in the passage translated), rendering Hebrew karmel fresh fruit, new growth (Leviticus 2:14)).
1. Of gunpowder: thoroughly or properly ground into small particles. Cf. corn v. 1. Now historical.
