Etymology: < we pron. + self pron.In the paradigm of Old English wē selfe the forms of self pron. are plural and agree in case with the personal pronoun; such forms are continued in Middle English we selve , which shows a voiced fricative. Forms showing word-final voiceless fricative (as in Middle English we self ) reflect substitution of uninflected self (see discussion at self pron.). There is probably no continuity between Middle English and later use. Compare discussion at us self pron., youself pron. A form weselves is also found, compare e.g.:1803 R. C. Dallas Hist.
