Etymology: < well adv. + girt adj.In the context of physical activity (see sense 1), after ancient Greek εὔζωνος (in εὔζωνος ἀνήρ well-girt man).
1. Firmly encircled or secured by a girdle or a girth. Hence of a person: braced or prepared for physical activity; fit, active; cf. gird v.1 1b. Also figurative.In quot. 1647: (of time) characterized by much activity, busy. Houre may also be a pun on whore; cf. discussion in New Eng. Q. (1974) 47 87–96.
