释义

westenadj.

Brit. /ˈwɛst(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈwɛst(ə)n/, Scottish English /ˈwɛst(ə)n/
Forms: Middle English westene; Scottish pre-1700 vestin, 1900s– wasten, 1900s– westin, 2000s– wasteen, 2000s– wastin.
Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Apparently partly formed within English, by derivation. Probably partly formed within English, by conversion. Probably partly a borrowing from Norn. Etymons: west adv., -en suffix4; English westen.

In sense 2 probably < westen (in westen-wind n. at westen adv. 1), apparently reanalysed as west adv. + -en suffix4; for a parallel development in other Germanic languages see discussion at westen adv. In Shetland use probably ultimately < the unattested Norn reflex of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic vestan westen adv.
