单词 whaup
释义

whaupn.

Brit. /wɔːp/, /hwɔːp/, U.S. /(h)wɔp/, /(h)wɑp/, Scottish English /hwɔp/
Forms: 1500s quha(i)p, 1600s whoup, 1600s–1800s whap, 1700s–1800s whaap, 1700s– whaup, (1700s whape, wap, 1800s whawp, quhaup).
Etymology: Perhaps for *whalp and allied to Old English huilpe (Seafarer 21), = early West Saxon *hwielpe < *χwalpjon-, < χwalp-: χwelp- a stem imitative of the bird's cry, and represented also in Low German regenwilp, -wölp sandpiper, West Frisian (greate) wylp curlew (reen-, wetterwylp, lytse wylp Numenius phæopus), Dutch wulp, wilp curlew. (West Frisian wettergulp, Low German regengilp show a variant with g.) The dialect name curlew-help may be for *curlew-whelp, and so attest the former existence of a variant *whelp; but compare the form hilpe (1530 in Ancestor XI. 179).
Scottish and northern.
The larger curlew, Numenius arquata. Also †great whaup, stock whaup (see stock n.1 and adj. Compounds 1e).
