Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < (i) well adv. + spoke, past participle of speak v., and partly (in β. forms) < (ii) well adv. + spoken adj.1 With the use as interjection compare earlier well said int.In quot. 1539 at sense A. 2 ultimately translating Hebrew ṭōḇ haddāḇār, literally ‘good is the speech’ ( < ṭōḇ good + ha- the + dāḇār speech, utterance).
