Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Westpolitik.
Etymology: < German Westpolitik policy towards Western nations (19th cent.) < West- west (see west adv., adj., n.1, and prep.) + Politik policy, politics (see politic n.). Compare Ostpolitik n.
Policy towards Western nations; spec. (in European politics) a policy of establishing or developing diplomatic and trading relations with Western nations, esp. (now chiefly historical) on the part of Communist states.
