Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Whig n.2, Italian -issimi, Latin -issimī.
Etymology: < Whig n.2 + either Italian -issimi, plural of the masculine superlative suffix -issimo, or its etymon classical Latin -issimī, nominative plural of the masculine superlative suffix -issimus. N.E.D. (1923) gives the stress on the second syllable.

Whigs whose commitment to Whig principles is unquestioned or extreme.Quot. 1832 probably alludes to quot. 1725, which is otherwise an isolated use.
