单词 wellanearing
释义

wellanearingint.

Forms: 1600s wallaneerin, 1600s–1700s wellaneerin, 1700s–1800s wallaneering, 1700s–1800s wellaneering.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: wellanear int., -ing suffix4.
Etymology: Apparently < wellanear int. + -ing suffix4.The word is recorded by F. K. Robinson in apparent use as an adjective, in sense ‘poor, wretched’:1876 F. K. Robinson Gloss. Words Whitby Wallaneering, ‘A poor wallaneering creature,’ a wanderer. A word in former-day use by old people hereabouts, but now obsolete. However, there is no other evidence for adjectival use, and Robinson's definition may be the result of a misunderstanding. In the first edition (1855) of his glossary Robinson merely notes: ‘this word we have heard, but do not remember its application. Mr. Marshall states it to be “an expression of pity”’.
English regional (northern). Obsolete.
