Etymology: < white adj. + winged adj.1 With later use, compare scientific Latin albipennis (from 1783 as a specific name), and also scientific Latin leucopterus (from 1788 as a specific name) and its etymon ancient Greek λευκόπτερος.
Having wings that are white or conspicuously marked with white. Frequently in names of birds. Also figurative.

white-winged scoter n. a large migratory scoter with a conspicuous patch of white on the wing, Melanitta deglandi, breeding in northern North America and Siberia. Melanitta deglandi is now often regarded as a subspecies of the velvet scoter, M. fusca, which breeds in northern Europe and Asia, and for which the name white-winged scoter is also sometimes used.
