Etymology: < white adj. + beard n. In sense 2 probably after scientific Latin Leucopogon, genus name ( R. Brown Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae (1810) 541).Apparently attested earlier as a surname; compare e.g. William Witberd (1221), Philippus Wytberd (1224). With the use in quot. 1999 at sense 1 compare aksakal n.
1. A man with a white beard; (hence) an elderly or old man.In quot. 1450 as an epithet of God, probably in allusion to the common depiction of him as an elderly man.
