Etymology: < either whiff v.1 (compare whiff v.1 6) or whiff n.1 (whiff n.1 1d) + -le suffix. Compare whiffle-ball n. at whiffle n. Compounds.The ball was invented in 1953 in Fairfield, Connecticut, by David N. Mullany, with the intention of creating a type of baseball which allowed children to pitch curves easily, and hence to achieve a strikeout (compare whiff n.1 1d) without causing injury or damage to property; it was manufactured by the company he founded, The Wiffle Ball, Inc., in the following year.
