γ. 1700s wickopick.

Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Southern New England Algonquian. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Western Abenaki. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Eastern Abenaki. Etymons: Western Abenaki wigebi; Eastern Abenaki wìkəpi.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < an unattested Southern New England Algonquian cognate of the forms listed below, and partly (in β. forms) < Western Abenaki wigebi inner bark (in general), or its cognate Eastern Abenaki wìkəpi piece of the fibrous inner bark of basswood or leatherwood, further cognate with Munsee Delaware wí:kpəy inner bark of basswood. Compare Western Abenaki wigebimezi, Eastern Abenaki wikəpímisi, both denoting the basswood tree.In c1612 W. Strachey recorded the related Virginia Algonquian weihkippeis as denoting ‘hemp’, probably with reference to the similar uses of the bark fibre (although there are separate Algonquian words for hemp). The origin of the γ. forms is unclear.
