Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English *wēden-drēam.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of an unattested Old English compound *wēden-drēam ( < wēden raving, frenzied, mad ( < the Germanic base of wood adj. + the Germanic base of -en suffix4) + dream n.1 (compare sense 3 at that entry)), after Old English wōd-drēam and wōd drēam (see note). Old English wēden is attested in several compounds, e.g. wēden-heort mad, insane (compare heart n.), wēden-sēoc mad, possessed by an evil spirit (compare sick adj.), and wedenonfa' n. Compare later widdrim n.Compare Old English wōd-drēam delusion, illusion, phantom ( < wood adj. + dream n.1) and also the parallel syntactic combination of adjective and noun wōd drēam frenzy, delirium, demonic possession (see wood dream at dream n.1 3):eOE tr. A state of mental disturbance or confusion; madness, frenzy; a wild fit. Also: a nightmare (literal and figurative). Frequently in in a widden-dream: all of a sudden; (also) in a state of great urgency or mental excitement.
