Etymology: < German Wirtschaftswunder, literally ‘economic miracle’ (1926 or earlier with reference to the American economy in the years before 1914; 1927 or earlier with allusion to the German economy c1890–1914; c1955 in specific use below, now the usual sense) < the genitive of Wirtschaft economy (see Wirtschaft n.) + Wunder wonder n.With the form Wirthschaftswunder compare variants at Wirtschaft n. In form Wirtschaftwunder reflecting the nominative form of the first element of the etymon.
A seemingly miraculous economic improvement; spec. the economic recovery of the Federal Republic of West Germany after the Second World War (1939–45).
