1. Wood that is whitish or very pale in colour; any of various types of such wood. Also: any of numerous trees producing such wood.The main commercial timbers known as whitewood are that of Liriodendron tulipifera (in the United States) and that of the Norway spruce, Picea abies (in Europe).Among the many trees to which the name has been applied are the tulip tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, and American basswood, Tilia americana, of North America; several trees of the Caribbean, including wild cinnamon, Canella alba, and members of the genus Tabebuia (family Bignoniaceae); and several Australian trees, including Atalaya glauca (family Sapindaceae), Lagunaria patersonia (family Malvaceae), and Polyscias elegans (family Araliaceae).
