1. An insect larva destructive to plants. Obsolete.In quot. 1643 tr. Latin convolvulus a caterpillar that rolls itself up in a leaf; in quot. 1658 tr. modern Latin verticillus, Greek σϕονδύλη.

1927 Daily Express 31 Aug. 5/5 Dr. Kathleen Carpenter's paper is upon the survival of some ice-age relicts in freshwater fauna of Cardiganshire, which relicts are whirl worms.
