Etymology: < post-classical Latin adlection-, adlectio (also allection-, allectio) election to a particular honour or office (4th cent.; earlier in Christian context, with reference to the apostles or the clergy (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian)) < classical Latin allēct- , past participial stem of allegere to elect, to select, appoint ( < ad- ad- prefix + legere to choose, to read: see lection n.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier election n. and lection n. II.

Appointment, by nomination rather than election, to a governing body (esp. the Senate), or to a position of higher status.Adlection to the Senate began under Julius Caesar.
