Forms: Also Middle English–1500s whyster.
Etymology: apparently identical with Old English hwǽstrian ‘susurrare’, ‘murmurare’, with root-vowel raised ( < *whester), partly by assimilation to whisper.Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈwhister.
