Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on an early Scandinavian lexical item. Etymons: whole adj., -some suffix1.
Etymology: < whole adj. + -some suffix1, perhaps after early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic heilsamr , Old Swedish helsamber (Swedish †helsam ), Old Danish (Danish, now archaic and regional) helsom , all in senses ‘in good health, salutary’). Compare halesome adj., healsome adj., hailsome adj.Compare Dutch †heelzaam in good health, salutary (1573), which may alternatively show a derivation from a verb cognate with whole adj. (compare heal v.1), and (probably after Dutch) West Frisian hielsum salutary. Compare also West Frisian heilsum , Old Dutch heilsam (Dutch heilzaam (1562 in †heylsamelick )), Old Saxon hēlsam (in hēlsamo (adverb) auspiciously; Middle Low German hēlsam , hēilsam ), Old High German (Middle High German, German) heilsam , all in senses ‘salutary, bringing benefit, salvation, or blessing’, all at least partly derived from nouns probably cognate with whole adj. (see discussion at holy adj.). On forms in wh- (due partly to equivalent graphic forms of whole adj., and partly to the restoration of the long vowel or diphthong under the influence of whole adj.), see discussion at whole adj.
