Etymology: < white adj. + loaf n.1 Compare later white bread n.In Old English both as a true compound, in which the first element in uninflected, ending in -e- connective (compare quot. eOE1 at sense 1), and as a syntactic combination of adjective and noun in which the first element is treated as a normal adjective inflected for case and number (compare quot. eOE2 at sense 1).
