Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; probably modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ad- prefix, Latin margin- , margō , -ate suffix3.
Etymology: < ad- prefix + classical Latin margin-, margō edge, border (see margin n.) + -ate suffix3, probably after post-classical Latin ad marginem (of notes) in the margin (1519 or earlier; compare earlier (in the same sense) in margine (from c1125 in British sources)). Compare earlier marginate v. 1 (only in the 17th cent. in this sense) and later margination n. 2. Compare also earlier marginalize v. 1, marginal adj. 1, and marginalia n.
